One dark, damp, fateful night, DVB connected to mirc.cc.tut.fi and set forth a chain of events which would forever change the shape of the scene as we know it. Just as the first day of the second world war will be remembered, so will this day. And it will be called, "Ego Day". Unwittingly, and because DVB is just DVB, he damaged the ego (otherwise known as "r3$p3C7") of one young lonely child called HT7Z. Little did DVB know that our dark horse HT7Z had just learnt how to use the /mode command, and would turn it's devastating power against the entire scene. He had an irc client, and he wasn't afraid to use it. A day passed, nothing happened, and the scene breathed a collective sigh of relief. Whispers would be heard in the corridors of scene-power, wondering whether the balance of power would be shifted...

We present the evidence from the OJuice one liner. Clearly, DVB had been overstepping his authority with someone. Everyone knows there's nothing wrong with Farbrausch.

We thought we were in the clear, but the worst was yet to come. We didn't realise how leet a ScriptKiddie.gif (1701 bytes)  HT7Z really was. After joining #coders and being given ops, he showed us some real skill. The Mirkforce was upon us! What could we do but watch this master at work. No multicollides for him. No amateur netsplit riding for him, oh no. He just cruised right in and was given ops because we trusted him. Wow, now thats some serious leet haxxoring. Within seconds, we were taken over. The evidence is right here.

Within a few more seconds, we were in #coders2, plotting our revenge. Malc and Aktion were working well together, creating an unbeatable team, while Sol mused on the meaning of life, death and democoding.

The channel remained taken for a few days. Christmas came and went. I got lots of kewl presents, including a super leet engraved Jack Daniels zippo. I really enjoyed my xmas lunch too, turkey and all the trimmings. Watched Toy Story 2, that was good. Oh, sorry, back to the story. After working up a bit of motivation, dvb, myself and a few other people decided to see what we could do about this. Luckily, witeshade spotted that the t/o had removed the +i on the channel, so we could see our targets. Nice. First of all we launched a portscan against the takeover bots. A few interesting open ports, but nothing of great use. Witeshade joked that we should check port 31337 for Backorifice. Being American, we all assumed he was genetically predisposed to being wrong. He was right, which was slightly embarassing. As he said it, the portscan hit 31337 and 31338, and what should we find but 2 psyBNC servers. A few minutes of hitting them and I got lazy. I kicked off a dictionary attack against the password, and went to watch a movie. Dedication, eh. Couple of hours passed, and nothing. Humm.

Meanwhile HT7Z came back to #coders2 to confess his sins, and to admit he'd actually lost control of the channel he supposedly took over. Genius.

A few days passed, and I decided that enough was enough. Time to mobilise the secret weapon, the team of uber-leet sceners who know no fear and have no concience. Unfortunately I found that instead of "no concience", it was "no conciousness". Never let sceners get near weed. It turns them ghey.

"Time to take this challenge on myself, I think old boy", I said to myself. I looked at my options, and decided we had a couple of choices. Choice #1: multicollide them out. Choice #2: Flood them off. Choice #3: Steal their IDENT. Choice #4: Mystery option ;)

I started loading clones for a multicollide. At that precise moment, BoyWonder Internet dumped out on me and left me with a flashing Online light on my cablemodem. Ironic that an online light actually means "totally fuckaroonied". Finally I managed to get back on the net, and had a chat with TTL-Logic. He was up for hitting them with bad packets, so off he went, smurf util in hand (making a change from what he normally has in his hand). While TTL got on with that and tried to get us a shell on one of their servers, I got hold of thec. DVB noticed a strange thing going on in #coders - seems the ScriptKiddie.gif (1701 bytes) hadn't configured his botmodes correctly - one of his bots was joining the chan, getting opped by one bot, then another bot kicked it. The bot in question was on a telia.com line, and it seemed to be a dialup line too. We figured if we could get someone on a telia.com line to step in with the right settings, because it's a dialup line the ops would be given on a pattern-matched host. So thec stepped forward into the breach, like a true hero. As we sorted out his settings, I get hit by a full on netsplit. Typical.

The netsplit rejoined, and thec went for it like his life depended on it. He was in the channel, ready to deop and op the good guys. sPiRiT was there with super-leeto-bitch-mode-gti-fuckwit-turbo, ready to takeover. And nothing happened. They were opping on explicit hostname. That really sucked. TTL wasn't getting very far with the pingflood, and we were running out of options. Plus I'd had enough, and I wanted some chinese food. Time to use choice #4.

Off I went to find the ircnet opers. I had a slight advantage here, cause I already know the Demon Internet UK ircops. But of course, the english being lazy bastards, none of them had been at work & answering their email. Eventually I managed to find some ircops. Even better, after subjecting them to a few minutes of my magnetic personailty, suave wit and charm, they agreed to come and help. They'd already heard about this takeover from some EFNET guy, god knows who ;).

Let the K-Lines begin! One by one the clones dropped off ircnet. After about 30minutes, somebody must have noticed as the bots kicked everyone out of #coders and +i'd it again. Never worry, the k-lines continued. About 30 minutes later one of the eu opers /msg'd me and pasted me an interesting chat. It seems the had noticed all his shells were getting k-lined and he wasnt too happy about it. About time to /query him I think. First of all he claimed he was offered the channel on #shells.pl, and he wasnt responsible for the original takeover. I asked him politely for the channel back, and he refused. I pointed out that he'd keep loosing shells to k-lines unless we got the channel back. The discussion went on for about 20 mins, back and forth - "un-kline my shells and I'll give the channel back", "give the channel back or you'll loose the lot to klines". He asked for a show of good faith, so I got him unbanned from the ircops channel and let him watch me "ask" for his klines to be removed, a demonstration I'd arranged with the opers to fool this idiot. Even though we'd agreed that I'd get him unbanned and ask in public for him then he'd give the chan back, he unsurprisingly didn't. Amusingly, this kid got really pissed about TTL smurfing him all the time, I'm sorry I lost the log of that! Anyway, I had a brief word with the UK ircop, who said he'd negotiate on my behalf and to /msg him in a few hours. Off I went for chinese food.

A few hours passed, and I came back to a /invite #coders from the ircops. We had the channel back! Oddly, the ircops asked me to remove some bans on them in #coders2, and asked if that chan had been taken as well. I was a bit confused about this as the chan wasn't taken, but removed the bans anyway. They opped me, I brought sPiRiT in, and #coders was back!

I later found out from Sol^HSA that the opers had joined #coders2 to check some stuff out, and at the same time had taken back #coders - setting it to +i and kicking everyone out so the channel could be safe. Unfortunately Coaxcable had got a bit handy with the ban key on them, and started organising pingfloods! Remember boys and girls, if the whois shows an ircop or a 127.0.0.1 ip address, be nice to them ;) Anyways, Sol had a direct word with the opers, and everything got sorted out. I had a chat with one of the guys...

<dEF_bASE> what did you do to him in the end?
<ircop> heh
<ircop> bullshitted
<ircop> like a true Brit ;)
<dEF_bASE> hehe told him the klines would be removed, i bet =)
<ircop> ;)
<ircop> never belive an oper
<ircop> we all lie ;)
<dEF_bASE> hehehehe so i've heard, you lying cheatign scum ;)
<ircop> heh ;)

So, in brief thats the story of the #coders takeover. Throughout the takeover, ht7z sent me some /querys. Click here to read the more interesting one. Finally, for any scener who needs it, here's a complete banlist provided for us by the opers:

The bots in #coders have had their protection increased, plus a load of dynamic bans have been put in place. If you're friendly and you find yourself banned, /msg someone and we'll make the changes for you.

So remember boys and girls, never fuck with #coders, never annoy "the god of the #coders dvb" and most of all don't make me have to wait for chinese food while I negotiate with your ass for the channel back. This document is mostly true ;)

Even though I wrote this .html, lots of other people did far more to get the chan back. Take your bows dvb, TTL, thec, wog, sol, witeshade, inFECTed & all the opers & everyone else who helped. And now we've got the chan back, if anyone else moans the bots are too strict, I'll mirkforce your ass... ;)

Corrections and additions:

1.   [30/12/01] Slight screwup on my part, it was witeshade who thought of scanning port 31337. Hey, the Americans always rewrite history to suit them, now it's our turn!

2.   [30/12/01] It's now 3 days after we got #coders back, and there are still 20 people in #coders2. Could this be the start of an underground rebel movement using binary addition?

3.   [30/12/01] Contrary to popular belief, I did not "give arse" to get the IRCops involved. It was spector who grabbed his ankles for the cause. I was just the pimp.

4.   [30/12/01] dvb informs us he uses the irc.kpnqwest.fi server, not mirc.cc.tut.fi. I'd change it if anyone cared.

5.   [30/12/01] dvb also informs us that he prefers "dvb" to "DVB". We still don't care, we'll call him devilbird.

6.   [31/12/01] On request from the opers, I've removed their nicks so they don't get involved in any shit. I'll be publishing their home addresses & phone numbers later...

7.   [01/01/02] Holy shite this page is popular, and I have no idea why. We're up to 600+ hits on this page, with about 250 of those from OJuice links. Thanks to Sol for posting!
