I know there will be a lot of sceptics about this one, but I thought I would
announce it. Microsoft is just about to release in beta, 'XNA Studio Express'.
As from August 20th 2006 you will be able to download a free copy of this
framework and write Managed DirectX games that should be easily portable on a
retail XBox 360.
I realise that Managed DirectX code will never out perform or offer the power of native C++ code and ASM,
but the Microsoft vision of XNA is to bring back the good old days of bedroom
game development.
I seriously recommend checking it out, this tool also allows independent game
developers a chance to build games for platforms more affordably and quickly.
Here is a video of 'Game Fest 2006',
it certainly shows how Microsoft aims to try and change the face of the game
development industry. It would be
interesting to know peoples views on Managed DirectX and the introduction of the XNA
technologies and visions.
I've been programming in Windows for about six
years (DB Business Line Applications). I've always wanted to write games but never got into it enough (Some might say; if I have not the will I will not find the way).
My first exposure was to the MS Games SDK (Basically GDI) and we all know how
that went. I know games development has never been easy, but it was
certainly more appealing before now. Its so much harder these days to
invest time into writing a game only for your peers to under-rate the work
you've put in to the thing. My personal opinion on XNA is alleluia!
It may be my way of finding the hours around my work and family to produce a
game of a quality that doesn't look 10 years out of date. I know for a lot
of professionals in the industry it will stir up a lot of controversy. It would
good if someone could start an in depth discussion about this subject. Do you
think Microsoft are falsely promising a renewed and revitalised industry?
An industry where teenagers can follow their dreams of becoming game developers
because they can now develop and deploy on their XBox 360? I don't know,
buts its certainly a dream worth holding on to.
